With a 37–85 record in its first six seasons, the Lady Bulldog programme that Landers inherited had practically no financial resources to work with. Landers, on the other hand, guided the Lady Bulldogs to a 16–12 record in his first season, and by his fourth season in Athens, he had guided them to their first of five NCAA Final Four appearances. By 1985, the Lady Dogs had advanced to the National Championship game for the first time.
He has won four National Coach of the Year awards and three SEC Coach of the Year awards since taking over at UGA. He has coached two Olympians (who have combined to win a total of six Gold Medals) as well as 11 Kodak All-Americans throughout his career. In 2000, Landers received the Coach of the Year award from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Today, his 24.4 wins per season average places him fourth among all active Division I women’s basketball head coaches, and his 789 career victories place him fourth all-time in the sport. Of the fourteen Division I women’s basketball head coaches to achieve 600 victories, Landers did it in the shortest amount of time, winning 784 games and reaching the milestone in only 784 games.
