August 2024 · 3 minute read

On Monday morning, a tragic wrong-way crash occurred on Interstate 295. The Falmouth Maine accident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and critical injuries to a third.

The accident took place around 10 a.m. near mile marker 10 on the northbound side of the interstate, forcing emergency services to respond, and close the highway for several hours.

Tragic accident caused extensive traffic backups, diverting drivers away from the scene and onto local roads.

Fatalities and injuries

Following the incident, emergency crews attended to the scene around mile marker 10 on the northbound side of I-295.

State police initially had no details regarding the extent of the injuries. Later, they confirmed in a press release that two individuals had suffered fatal injuries.

The deceased were identified as 72-year-old Nancy Ezhaya, a resident of Yarmouth, and 61-year-old Allen Apblett, of Oklahoma.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Apblett’s wife suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland; there has been no further update regarding her medical condition.

Collision and investigation

The Maine State Police have revealed that a preliminary investigation showed that a Toyota SUV driven by Ezhaya entered I-295 driving south in the northbound lane.

This caused the SUV to collide with a Honda SUV heading north in the correct northbound lane, leading to the fatal incident.

Investigators are yet to determine why Ezhaya was driving in the wrong direction.

The accident remains under investigation as police attempt to uncover more details about the collision.

Traffic impact

The accident caused a significant traffic impact on the busy holiday weekend, leading to the closure of I-295 for almost three hours.

I-295 highway was closed at Exit 11 in Falmouth, with traffic redirected onto Route 1.

The diversion was in place for several hours, leading to long lines of cars parked along the highway. The interstate reopened around 1:15 p.m.

However, the traffic on the southbound side of the highway was also impacted significantly, causing additional delays.

Numerous drivers and their families were stranded in their vehicles for hours, with some passing the time playing ball, riding scooters, or walking their dogs.

Funeral home response

Following the incident, reports surfaced that a van from a funeral home attended the scene of the accident, raising concerns and speculation regarding the incident’s direct cause.

However, no official statements have been issued to suggest that the funeral home’s presence was linked to the incident.

Police and other law-enforcement agencies are investigating the cause of the accident, and it remains unclear why the driver of the Toyota SUV was traveling in the wrong direction.

The incident caused significant traffic disruption on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, leading to motorists and their families being stranded and limited in their movement for several hours.

Falmouth Maine accident is under investigation, and authorities have requested the public’s cooperation, urging anyone with any information regarding the crash to come forward.
