August 2024 · 2 minute read

Jane, who was born on August 31, 1934, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Mary C. (Shull) and Edward J. Mackey, had a fulfilling life.

She was a bright and ambitious student who graduated from Stow High School and Mount Union College, Class of 1956.

She then went on to earn her Masters from Kent State University, which equipped her for a 29-year teaching career in Akron Public Schools.

Jane was passionate about education and actively involved in various organizations. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton and the PEO Sisterhood.

Jane was also a proud member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and served on the Mount Union Alumni Council.

Her dedication to the Mount Union community was further highlighted by her 20-year season ticket holder status for Mount Union Football.

In addition to her work and community involvement, Jane had many interests. She enjoyed reading, watching sports, and annual family vacations in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

Her love for family was evident in the close relationships she had with her children, David A. Barrett of Winthrop, Maine, Susan Barrett of Boston, Massachusetts, and Catherine “Kate” Barrett of North Canton.

She was also survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. Robert T. Barrett of Fair Oaks, California; sister-in-law, Carolyn Mackey of Tallmadge; eight nieces and nephews, and seventeen great-nieces and great-nephews.

Sadly, Jane passed away, and she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Barrett; parents-in-law, Robert W. and Harriet (Todd) Barrett; brother, James E. Mackey; sister, Ann L. Koch; brother-in-law, Robert C. Koch; and sister-in-law, Jeanette Cameron Barrett.

However, her loved ones and friends will have a chance to pay their respects at her visitation, which will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home in Canton, Ohio.

A memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edward J. and Mary C. Mackey Scholarship Fund at Mount Union College.
