Jonny Lee Miller films Elementary Season 2 in London: would you hit it?

Here are some new photos of Jonny Lee Miller on the London set of Elementary. Yes, you heard me. For Elementary’s Season 2 premiere, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Jane Watson are returning to Sherlock’s old stomping grounds in London. The “hook” of Elementary is not just that Sherlock is transported to the modern age – which is why we love Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock – but that Elementary’s Sherlock has been banished/expelled from his home country (because of a drug addiction) and forced to become a “consulting detective” for the NYPD. The wonderful Aidan Quinn plays Captain Gregson, a New York policeman who understands Sherlock’s value.

Which is to say that I’m actually watching and enjoying Elementary. I know, I was shocked that I liked the series so much. Part of it is that I enjoy detective stories and crime procedurals (I spent years of my life as a Law & Order addict), but part of it is that Jonny’s version of Sherlock is actually enjoyable. Lucy Liu’s Watson is pretty good too, but the best part is that the two actors have a lovely, comfortable sort of chemistry. It’s not sexual and it’s not like they’re endlessly riffing off of each other. It just seems like they’re two characters who enjoy each other’s company.

The last episodes of Elementary’s Season 1 were really good – Natalie Dormer came in as Sherlock’s ex-lover and the story twisted and turned and I was genuinely surprised by what they did with the characters. I’m assuming that they’ve left the door open for Dormer to return in future episodes as needed (because that would be really interesting). I’m also interested in seeing what happens as Season 2 opens up and why Holmes and Watson are in London.

And yes, I would hit it. I’ve loved Jonny for years, and I’m glad that he’s finally found his place on American television. He’s been trying to make an American TV show work for a while, and I like his version of Sherlock – he makes the character new and interesting and much different than Benedict Cumberbatch’s version. One of my favorite parts about Jonny’s Sherlock? His Sherlock has Jonny’s tattoos! I love that the makeup people don’t cover up the tatts.
