MC Ren is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, actor, director, and writer. Alongside Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube, MC Ren was a member of the hip hop group N.W.A (an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes), considered as one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of hip hop music. He spent his childhood years growing up in Pannes Avenue in Compton, California.

Along with his childhood friend MC Chip, MC Ren formed the group named Awesome Crew and they performed at parties and nightclubs.

Trying his chances to make money, he joined the Kelly Park Compton Crips, of which rapper Eazy-E would also become a member. However, MC Ren eventually left the alliance and got engaged in drug dealing as he found the latter to be more promising.

MC Ren quit drug dealing after there was a raid on MC Chip’s house. MC Ren then started focusing on his musical pursuits.

He has also been childhood friends with rapper Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, with whom he started collaborating in 1985.

After graduating high school, he wanted to join the United States Army but then changed his mind after watching the 1987 war drama film Full Metal Jacket.

He has credited KRS-One, Chuck D, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and Run-DMC as some of his biggest influences.

MC Ren was offered to play the character named A-Wax in the 1993 teen hood drama film Menace II Society. However, he declined the offer after initially accepting it when he joined the Nation of Islam in late 1992. The part finally went to rapper and actor MC Eiht.

On November 16, 1993, he released his debut album Shock of the Hour and it peaked at #1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (Billboard) chart and at number #22 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

MC Ren founded the record label Villain Entertainment in 1999.

He was portrayed by Aldis Hodge in the 2015 biographical musical crime drama film Straight Outta Compton, depicting the rise and fall of the gangsta rap group N.W.A.
