Mike Swope Obituary, Death – The injuries that Mike E. Swope, 55, of Mulvane, Kansas, sustained in a motorcycle accident led to his passing on Sunday, October 1, 2023. He was the son of Neil Nelson and Helen LaVonne (Williams) Swope and was born on July 5, 1968 in St. Joseph, Missouri. His mother’s maiden name was Williams.
He was born and reared in St. Joseph, where he also completed his education and ultimately graduated from Lafayette High School in 1986. After graduating from high school, he attended Missouri Western State University, where he acquired his Bachelor’s degree. He then continued his education at Wichita State University, where he earned his Master’s degree in English. While he was attending school, he worked as a cook at Rax Restaurant and as a mechanic at the business owned by his father, Star Diesel Truck Stop, located in Elwood, Kansas.
Mike began his professional life in Wichita, Kansas, working for Koch Industries as a Graphic Designer. He remained there until 2005, when he joined his brother Stan in working at U-Save Tire in Wichita. Since that time, he has been there. Mike had a lot of fun working for the family business up until 2017, which was the year that Stan passed away before him.
At the time of our conversation, Mike was employed with Garda Armored Transport. In addition to that, he contributed articles to the Mulvane Newspaper and worked as a freelance graphic designer for the Mulvane Chamber of Commerce. He had a great deal of success as a writer, and his works of poetry and short fiction were published more than once. As a student and an instructor of Taekwondo, he had a strong commitment to the martial art.
Mike began training in taekwondo at a young age and went on to form the Kansas Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Association. He was active in the martial art for practically his whole life. In addition to that, he enjoyed reading books and comics, writing, working as a graphic designer, collecting Apple technological products, riding motorbikes, and watching movies.
