The song was released by the Supergroup USA for Africa as a benefit single for the African famine relief. It was the brainchild of musician and activist Harry Belafonte who had been inspired by the UK group Band-Aid’s song, Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie and produced by Michael Omartian and Quincy Jones, the track was recorded on January 28, 1985, and featured 21 solo singers and over 23 singers on the chorus. It proved a huge success and has since gone on to become the 8th best-selling physical single of all time.
